James Dean
I was born and raised in New Jersey where I began my Spanish journey in Elementary school in an early Spanish introduction program and stuck with the language as I went through West Morris Central High school. I then went to college for my BA in Spanish and my MAT in PREK-12 Spanish Education at James Madison University in Virginia. During my time at JMU I studied abroad in Salamanca Spain and received a 4.0 from the University of Salamanca. I taught at all levels from a bilingual Kindergarten class, to seniors in college (where I developed and taught my own class.) With experience teaching in elementary, middle and high schools in Virginia, and an elementary school in Spain.
In my first few years of Spanish teaching I worked for 6 years at public and charter schools in and around Chicago. During my first year teaching I had to build the curriculum for the Spanish team as I was teaching for the first time. This spurned a love of thematic project based learning where the students and I constantly work to produce real world applicable projects to demonstrate mastery over what we have learned, in a way that pushes students to interact with the language in a variety of contexts.
Throughout my journey of learning Spanish I have had some amazing teachers who showed me how interesting and enjoyable learning about others cultures can be. My hope is that I can help my students see how languages will be an integral part of their lives, and how, within their lifetimes they will be interacting with it regularly. I want to show them how much beauty, culture, and wonder the world has in store for them. All the while, Spanish will be our main focus, I also will be integrating various Social Emotional practices that aid students in their study habits, as well as cultural lessons that will shape student's understanding of global citizenship and how the world is all interconnected.
